Elderly Mental HealthAs technology changes the medical profession, people throughout the world are living longer lives compared to our grandparents. One interesting stat – only seven percent of psychiatric services are consumed by the elderly (inpatient). An estimated 25% of the older population is believed to be in need of some type of mental health treatment for various disorders. Although society needs mental health professionals more than ever before, resources are tough to find and fewer people are seeking treatment. A handful of professionals provided insight to reasoning. One thought relates to media. Media seems to portray those in need of mental health professionals as abusers, sociopaths, etc. The truth seems to be less appealing and exciting … the older population seeks mental health for depression, anxiety, baldness, grasping with old age, etc. Another thought relates to age. For whatever reason, society tends to place a stronger emphasis on youth. Focus is given to the older population, but some feel this portion of society has limited funds and may not fully benefit from treatment. There are many factors related to the poor standard of mental health for the older population. Many people tend to visit their primary care doctors whenever an issues arises. These doctors are great but do not specialize in mental health and typically attribute symptoms to more common aliments. Most health issues identified by primary care doctors relate to old age. The older population should consult with their doctors and review their insurance plans for possible alternatives. Government agencies have historically focused on long-term health care for the elderly while mental health professionals focus on improving programs for the existing, seriously, younger mental ill. Recognition and focus should be given to the elderly. The government struggles to fund research for elderly mental health issues simply because the older population does not consume existing health service program today. Loved ones of the elderly must encourage and look out for the betterment of their relatives and friends. Together, we can make a difference. |
