Health Insurance for Seniors

Health insurance for senior living in the United States can be extremely expensive and to a certain extent very confusing.

How much does Medicare cover?  Will you need a supplemental health care plan?  If so, will you need to be fully covered medically or will an HMO or PPO suffice for you?  And above all, will the coverage you need be affordable to you?

All about Medicare

When you reach the age 65, Medicare will begin to cover part of your medical expenses with no monthly premium or deductible.  These include inpatient hospital care, nursing home care, hospice care, and some home health care.  Other services are also covered but include a monthly premium and deductible.  These services include prescription drugs, doctors’ services, outpatient hospital care, medical equipment, and physical and occupational therapy.

An alternative to traditional Medicare that charges fees for service for Medicare beneficiaries is to choose to join a PPO or HMO.  Beneficiaries have to choose a doctor within the network.  However, these plans cover all Medicare services at a cheaper cost.

Although Medicare will cover several medical expenses, it will not cover every medical expense.  To supplement the Medicare coverage, many beneficiaries purchase additional coverage to fill in the gaps and lower out-of –pocket expenses.

HMOs or PPOs are the most economical individual policies due to the lower premiums for seniors in exchange for fewer physicians from which to choose.
